These are some facets of the question of school funding in Kansas. Please contribute ideas to shape these up.

1) Policies regarding how to encourage students to participate joyfully and effectively in their education, including limits to prevent "burn-out", would be developed by experienced teachers, parents, and students.

These policies should be as locally determined as possible.

2) The "public" support of a school should be voluntary - i.e.: not "public" at all, as commonly used today.

3) The state, by arrogating to itself the role of financial support and administration of schools and the taxation of the public (for the support, the administrative costs, and the tax collecting costs), is indicting the citizens of willful neglect.

4) The state judiciary, by arrogating to itself the decision that belongs to the elected representatives in Kansas (since it really belongs to the people who are represented by these officials), has made a mockery of the republican form of government that Kansas claims to have.

I am completely, 100% pro-life, and I am against embryonic stem-cell research. I do support adult stem-cell research, since it doesn't destroy human life, and it has shown some good results.

I am running as an independent, just like so many others out there, like Lieberman for example, because I believe that both major parties are not going to fix the problems in our nation or our State that need to be fixed.

• I see a nation that needs to bring its jobs back, but doing so means overturning the WTO.
• I see a nation that needs to stop Illegal Immigration, and that means taking away the incentive for cheap labor by enforcing the laws making it illegal to employ illegal aliens.
• I see a nation that is really failing its children by removing the rights of parents to raise their children as they see fit. Why shouldn't we allow parents the option of sending their children to school's in line with their beliefs by giving parents back their own tax money to make it happen (the hypocrites in D.C. almost exclusively send their children to private schools).
• I see a nation that is being raped by the oil barons while our elected officials avoid even the discussion of using our own domestic oil that would save us hundreds of billions of dollars (just go to a search engine and type in GULL ISLAND).
• I see a nation that is not being told the truth, and if I can get in there, I will make every attempt to increase the volume on issues that matter.

Energy summit draws crowd to hear experts

A forum on the energy crisis facing many Americans every time they fill their gas tanks drew more than 50 residents from across Johnson County to the University of Kansas Edwards Campus, Overland Park, Tuesday.

Energy industry and government leaders expressed ideas and heard from people at U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore's forum, "Third District Energy Summit: A Call for Energy Independence."

Jason Littlejohn, Lawrence, said America has ignored oil resources, including at Alaska's North Slope and Gull Island. The comments are supported in a book by Lindsey Williams, who suggests the government is engaged in an "energy conspiracy."

Abner Deatherage, Prairie Village, who worked with the oil industry for 50 years prior to retirement, said untapped Alaskan oil deposits are real.

"I've got documentation," Deatherage said.

Moore said, "I'd like to see it."

Deatherage said he favors conservation and alternative fuel sources, but for them to have an effect could take 20 years versus the faster path offered by developing known U.S. oil supplies. He said those supplies could end dependence on the Middle East and cut price at the pumps by half.

"The oil is there," Littlejohn said.

Campaign 02 was a real learning curve for all of us. For many of us, this was the discovery of how the process works, and a lot of groping around in the dark without experienced people to rely upon. The first thing that should be noted is that we were ill prepared for a real challenge to the Majors when we tried to put together our Campaigns in just about 6 months, and with little to no money. They learned long ago to get started on the next election the moment the current election is over. They also have a developed long term plan, which the Reform Party has to develop now. They utilize the entire 2 to 6 year election cycle to build up their bank accounts and have the money necessary for the advertising etc. to win. The Reform Party has now had its teeth cut by a younger group that will be able to build upon their experiences, and pass it on to our next group of leaders. Many of the points brought up by some of our past Candidates were very useful, and I want to thank them now. Darrel King, Alvin Bauman, and anyone I may have missed here, Thank You for all that you taught us.

Many corporate, national, and international groups are taking away our rights and freedoms for their own profit. They succeed in their goals to establish global fascist feudalism primarily by dividing us, pitting each of us against our neighbors, and by trapping us in vices that put our own passions at odds with our better judgement, keeping us from uniting for our common cause of protecting our freedoms from greedy, selfish tyrants.

CONGRESS PASSES, CLINTON PREPARES TO SIGN ANNUAL FREEDOM TO FARM BILL BAILOUT MONEY

Congress has passed and Bill Clinton is expected to sign a $15 billion package of farm assistance --- including $5.5 billion in direct payments that would reach farmers by September 30, in the midst of the congressional campaigns --- to compensate growers for a third straight year of low commodity prices and to allow growers to buy cheaper crop insurance.

Yet, as Abner Deatherage, a retired U.S. foreign service officer who lives in Prairie Village, Kansas and James D. Baldwin, a former rancher from Independence, Missouri and chairman of Local 249 Retiree Chapter of the United Auto Workers, rightfully pointed out in a recent Kansas City Star op-ed essay, "these bailouts are unsatisfactory -- many farmers are underpaid while some are overpaid.

"Also, bailouts are uncertain and cost taxpayers substantially more than would a dependable, fair permanent price support program. A basically reformed foreign policy --- especially its unconstitutional trade element --- is keenly needed. United States agricultural and other exports must recover and increase under a rational, mutually beneficial trade policy," they add.
