A candlelight vigil Friday in support of the state's controversial new immigration law and more arrests from protests against it wrapped up several days of activism and tension surrounding the implementation of the new law.

A federal judge's decision Wednesday to block some provisions in the law meant that its implementation Thursday was muted. But the decision did not please activists, and groups on both sides of the issue showed Friday that they will continue to call for the law's full implementation or rejection.

Two men carrying Mexican flags ran into the outfield during the seventh inning of the New York Mets’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Citi Field.

The men were apprehended by security fairly quickly without much incident.

Before the game, about 40 demonstrators across the street from the ballpark protested Arizona’s immigration law, chanting “Oppose racism!” and “Boycott Arizona!”

In the last 48 hours almost everything that can be said about illegal immigration has been said. But I am more interested in a few truths that are never quite spoken.

1) Why the Sense of Exemption? Why and how exactly do the supporters of illegal immigration justify massive disobedience of federal law? I suspect the answer is predicated in large part on the source of illegal immigration — that if it were a question of a half-million entering illegal Rwandans or Balkan peoples each year, the issue would have remained strictly a matter of legality.

Two days after Gov. Jan Brewer called a judge's temporary injunction of parts of Senate Bill 1070 a "little bump in the road," her office confirmed that she would consider tweaking the law in response to the ruling.

Brewer already has spoken to Republican legislative leaders about the possibility of calling state lawmakers into a special session to alter and strengthen the immigration law.

"We need to explore any and all options, including the possibility of tweaks to SB 1070, to get the legislation implemented as soon as possible," Brewer said in a statement e-mailed to The Arizona Republic.

Arizona’s appeal of a federal court ruling that blocks the central provisions of a state law requiring police to determine the immigration status of people stopped for questioning was set for November.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco today denied Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s bid for an expedited hearing in September. State lawyers argued the earlier date was needed because parts of the law barred by the lower court addressed “serious criminal, environmental and economic problems” due to ineffective federal enforcement of immigration laws.

A group of Republican senators has written to top immigration officials in the Obama administration asking them to reveal whether large-scale plans are under way to provide a so-called non-legislative version of amnesty.

The lawmakers cite an 11-page draft document written by staff to the director of the Citizenship and Immigration Service that says they are reviewing several executive orders and other mechanisms that effectively would serve as a substitute for comprehensive immigration reforms.

When the prospects for a reform bill turned bleak earlier this year, immigration advocates told themselves to be patient. John McCain would be back, just as soon as he fended off a conservative primary challenge in Arizona next month.

PHOENIX - New figures released Friday show that 71 people in all were arrested in Phoenix during protests of Arizona's new immigration law.

The protests were held Thursday as the new law took effect, although without its strongest provisions.

An impromptu group of roughly 200 protesters gathered between Fourth and Fifth avenues on Madison Street late Thursday afternoon, blocking traffic and prompting yet another warning to disperse from Phoenix police.

The crowd gathered at about 4:30 p.m. when a flatbed truck full of electronic speakers pulled up and began playing music. Soon, rappers were atop the truck singing along with the crowd, which included numerous children.

According to an internal U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services memo going the rounds of Capitol Hill and obtained by National Review, the agency is considering ways in which it could enact “meaningful immigration reform absent legislative action” — that is, without the consent of the American people through a vote in Congress.

“This memorandum offers administrative relief options to . . . reduce the threat of removal for certain individuals present in the United States without authorization,” it reads.

Lawyers for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Thursday filed an appeal of a federal court judge’s decision to gut the state’s new tough immigration law and they have asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to act quickly on their challenge.

“I will not back down,” Brewer said in a news release announcing the filing of the appeal.

Clinton appointee guts Arizona law to defend citizens from illegal aliens

An activist group battling illegal immigration is calling for citizens to remain "calm" after a ruling from a federal judge in Arizona gutted a state law intended to defend citizens from illegal aliens – a decision a key member of Congress called "beyond absurd."

The ruling released today by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton, a Clinton appointee, struck down sections of the Arizona law that made it a crime not to carry appropriate papers for immigration registration and criminalized illegal aliens' efforts to get jobs.

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his patrol deputies will conduct their 17th crime suppression sweep in the Valley on the same day SB1070 goes into effect.

According to an MCSO press release, Arpaio plans to continue enforcing all state and federal immigration laws despite the controversy surrounding the state’s new immigration law.

Arpaio and up to 200 deputies and posse volunteers will participate in the operation, the release stated.

The 11th-hour decision by a federal judge to block the most controversial provisions of Arizona's immigration law won't stop the clock on the fight over illegal immigration.

Soon after U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton issued her ruling on SB 1070, putting on hold some of its most divisive measures for cracking down on illegal immigrants, a disappointed but defiant Republican Gov. Jan Brewer made clear she would not back down.

"This fight is far from over," she said in a statement. "In fact, it is just the beginning, and at the end of what is certain to be a long legal struggle, Arizona will prevail in its right to protect our citizens."

PHOENIX - The effect of Arizona's new immigration law may be making its way into classrooms.

Jeffrey Smith, superintendent of the Balsz Elementary School District, said more than 500 students in the district did not show up on the first day of school this week.

While he admits it’s not unusual for a large number of students to not make it on the first day, he said this year’s number was unusually high compared to previous years.
